Medway Grid Energy Storage System

Project summary

The Medway Grid Energy Storage System will use a group of rechargeable batteries to store excess electrical energy at times of low demand, which can then be released in periods of high demand. In doing so, the project will enhance the flexibility and reliability of the grid without creating emissions or waste products.

The Medway Grid project will enhance the reliability of the Independent System Operator of New England electric grid (ISONE) and support the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in achieving its Clean Peak Standard.

System details:

  • Generation: 250MW/500Mwh
  • Parcel area: 10.6 Acres
  • Location: 55, 53, and 49 Milford Street, Medway, MA
  • Safety: site will be remotely monitored 24/7 with adherence to FERC and NERC standards
  • Located strategically near an existing utility substation and transmission right of way

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) use a group of rechargeable batteries to store excess electrical energy, which can then be released later in response to increased demand. A few benefits of a BESS include:

  • Faster, more flexible, and lower-cost electricity: a BESS can respond in milliseconds, increasing both speed and reliability
  • Integration with renewable energy through the Massachusetts Clean Peak Program
  • Adheres to international, national, and state safety requirement standards and best practices

Construction of the project commenced in September 2024 and will conclude in or about December 2025. The construction will last approximately 16 months. All construction activities will be limited to Monday through Friday 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM (with the exception of emergency circumstances on a given day that necessitate work beyond such times).

The following are the major construction activities expected in the next few weeks:

  • Daily SWPPP inspections continue
  • Excavation/drilling has begun on the EverSource Gen Tie pole foundations
  • Water truck has been dispatched again 11/8 and will be onsite 11/12 to keep fugitive dust at a minimum

Construction start notice September 2024 can be found here.

Training exercise conducted by the Massachusetts State Police. Respective notice can be found here.

Medway Grid will serve as a positive and beneficial presence in the local community for years to come. The project will offer essential capacity to the grid with no air-polluting emissions and generate significant tax revenue for the Town of Medway over the project’s life.

Medway Grid has developed a Community Outreach Plan developed in collaboration with the Town of Medway which can be found here.

  • The Medway Conservation Commission issued an Order of Conditions to the Project which can be found here. An appeal to the order was resolved through a Superseding Order of Conditions by the MassDEP Office of Appeals and Dispute Resolution which can be found here.
  • The Department of Public Utilities’ Order for the Medway Grid Project can be found here.

The project layout for the Medway Grid Project can be found here.
